Japonism Forever

Stylized Sculpture : Contemporary Japanese Fashion Exhibition @ Asian Art Museum - San Francisco

Fashion as sculptural wearable form on view from five designers - Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara - can also be seen as an experimental approach to contemporary art, which no longer has distinct genres. In recent years, the Kyoto Costume Institute has placed increasing emphasis on Japanese contemporary fashion and the role of its creativity within a global context.

In the late 1970's a group of fashion designer ingeniously, and sometimes provocatively, began to tear into and remake the Western aesthetic paradigm that had dominated the fashion world up to that time. These designers played an important role not only in the de-Westernization but also in the popularization of contemporary fashion. The broad influence that Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Johji Yamamoto have had on other designers active today in Paris is huge. And under the tutelage of these Japanese artists has emerged a new generation of Japanese talent including such designers as Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara.

Kimonos : Sophie Milenovitch @ Abrams - ISBN 0-8109-9450 / Seuil - ISBM 978-2-02-094027-6

These Japanese designers have made their mark on fashion with avant-garde shapes, stark color schemes and innovative textile technologies. To anyone familiar with traditional Japanese clothing, these radical contemporary garments resonate with the aesthetics of a culture more fascinated with silhouette, surface and cloth itself than with the delineation of the body - a culture known for its synthesis of artistry and technique. Sophie Milenovitch is a designer who lived in Tokyo for two years. Her passion for Yohji Yamamoto and textiles led her to explore the history of kimonos, raising questions on culture and influences on designers such as Madeleine Vionnet up to Martin Margiela.

ANTWERP : De Collectie, Selectie II

The Fashion Museum of Antwerp -- the MoMu -- has brought 8 exhibitions since it opened 4 years ago!

Linda Loppa, former Director and Founder of the Museum as well as the Fashion School can be very proud of what she was able to accomplish, turning definitively Antwerp into another capitale of fashion. From the Museum to the exhibitions inside and through the annual fashion student show 2007, a vibrant homage was transpiring: Linda Loppa recently left Antwerp to manage the Italian Polimoda Fashion School in Florence.

  • De Collectie, Selectie II - the second exhibition on this theme: the old traditional department store "Old England" was revisited and it was exactly located in the same place. However the exhibition took the liberty to show beautiful antique pieces from the Museum's treasure mixed with very contemporary garments and accessories which could belong to Walter Van Beirendonck or Galliano, Veronique Branquinho or Chanel. The Margiela trench coats row looked over an extravagant series from Dirk Van Saene - Fashion Sampling - black dresses. (combining a skirt from the 50's with a Thierry Mugler design top or Yves Saint Laurent design skirt with a 1850's top). Babywear display faced lingerie and corsages tried to escape petticoats. A true pleasure for the fashion eye and of course a wonderful tool for the fashion students of the Royal Academy to understand the fashion history.
  • Bernhard Willhem - Het totaal Rappel - Next exhibition 07/13/07 - 01/27/08: the Swiss artists Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs, fashion photographers / winner Photo Hyeres 2005, who were also invited to exhibit in San Francisco by the Arts of Fashion Foundation , created the graphic design and scenography for the exhibition! Can't wait to discover it!

Susan Scafidi - International Fashion & Textile Conference

Alain Coblence, Attorney in Law, based in NY & Paris, representing the CFDA, was back to Hyeres International Fashion Festival to direct a new interesting conference linked to the copyright in fashion, during the International Fashion & Textile Conference, organised by the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode. The title was: Culture of the protection versus cultural protection - The founding principles of the protection of intellectual property and their confrontation with recent developments of society and of technology.

Susan Scafidi, Associate Professor in Law - Fordham Law School, author of the passionate and insightful book: "Who Owns Culture? Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law" (2005) as well as the dynamic writer of the tremendously informative blog www.counterfeitchic.com; was one of the guests of Alain Coblence's round table during Hyeres 07 Fashion Festival. Susan Scafidi was instrumental with Jeffrey Banks on July 27, 2006 when she testified in support of H.R. 5055 at the Congress.

Susan Scafidi dress Congress Narciso Rodriguez

Unbelievable but True... is the saying: on July 27, 2006 Susan was wearing an Narciso Rodriguez dress from his spring 06 collection to testify, a designer whose collections had been largely copied by different labels previously. Ironically that same dress was copied by Forth & Towne (one of the brand of clothing stores owned by Gap Inc.) in their collection for spring 07; to add to the irony moreover, the current financial backer for Narciso Rodriguez is another pillar of American fashion industry "Liz Claiborne".... GALLIEROCK: Jean-Charles de Castelbajac @ Galliera Fashion Museum - Paris

After the Victoria & Albert Museum in London with Pop-aganda: The Fashion and Style of JC de Castelbajac, the Galliera Fashion Museum in Paris has just given a “Carte blanche to Jean-Charles de Castelbajac” in its latest, most awaited new exhibition: Gallierock from April 7- July 29, 2007. It certainly could not get any better for this visionary fashion designer, famously known for his unique ability to step over the ludic boundaries of fashion, history, design, art and music.

A giant welcoming Rubik’s® cube will enlighten the fashionitas visitors as they make their first steps into the exhibition. The famous « cabinet of curiosities » will make them travel back in time with historical iconic fashion figures such as Napoleon’s wardrobe or Joan of Arc’s armor…

JC/DC @ GALLIERA

The third room will be entirely devoted to the throne reception gallery, filled with JC/DC’s majestic portrait-dresses and his exceptional visual quotes. The exhibition will end to the sound of Rock, Hip-Hop, and other urban vibrations, thus revealing JC/DC’s passion for contemporary art and the various inspirational sources behind his emblematic designs.

JC/DC @ GALLIERA

With Gallierock, JC/DC mixes over 40 years of design and creation from 1968 to today, coming back on his unique and most definitively modern style filled with logotypes, accumulations, esthetical chaos, dynamism, primary colorful ranges, sustainable textiles, as well as luxury and high-tech materials. Entirely designed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Gallierock is a one of a kind performance-exhibition.
