RAQUEL DE CARVALHO NOVAIS - Santa Marcelina College of Arts - Brazil

The collection is inspired by the book "Barren Lives" from Graciliano Ramos. This is the story of a simple family that suffers from poverty and dryness in the Northeast of Brazil. Fabiano is one of the most typically brazilian characters and he represents strength, courage and resilience, and bears representative marks from resistance in the dry environment of Caatinga*.
*Caatinga is an exclusive type of vegetation in Brazil, and an ecoregion characterized by this vegetation.

The name "Caatinga" means "white forest" or "white vegetation" (die = forest, vegetation and Death = white) and is a Tupi word.
